Nigeria on the Fast Lane: NCC Unlocks 6GHz Spectrum to Supercharge Internet Speeds
Nigeria to Leverage 6GHz Spectrum Band for Improved Internet Speeds
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to utilize the 6GHz spectrum band to enhance internet speeds across the country. This move is expected to address the growing demand for high-speed internet and support the deployment of advanced applications.
Benefits of the 6GHz Spectrum Band
The 6GHz spectrum band offers several advantages over previous bands, including faster data transfer rates and higher throughput. This will enable the deployment of Wi-Fi 6 applications, which are expected to revolutionize broadband connectivity in Nigeria.
Increasing Demand for Speed
According to the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, the demand for high-speed internet is on the rise, and the current 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands are facing capacity constraints. The deployment of the 6GHz spectrum band will provide the necessary spectrum to support this growing demand.
“The 6 GHz band, spanning from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, significantly expands available spectrum, which is essential to support the growing demand for high-speed Internet and advanced applications,” said Dr. Maida.
“Wi-Fi plays a critical role in deploying fixed broadband connectivity in homes, offices, and other diverse environments. Most residential Internet traffic connects to end users via Wi-Fi. In enterprise environments, Wi-Fi is essential for handling large amounts of data and connecting a large number of devices simultaneously with improved reliability, higher data throughput, and lower latency.”
Crowded Radio Waves
Atiku Lawal, NCC’s head of spectrum management, noted that congested airwaves are currently limiting the potential of Wi-Fi in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. He stated that more than 70 countries have already taken steps or are considering taking steps to open up the 6GHz band for unlicensed Wi-Fi use.
- The decision to open up the 6GHz frequency band for unlicensed Wi-Fi usage is expected to revolutionize broadband connectivity in Nigeria.
- This move will significantly improve Internet services, providing faster and more reliable connections.
- With the advent of Wi-Fi 6, users can expect higher data speeds and increased capacity, making it ideal for high-demand environments such as stadiums, airports, and offices.
Operator’s Request
Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), praised the NCC and appealed to the federal government to support telecom operators in upgrading to the new spectrum bands.
- He stated that telecom operators are struggling to expand their networks and need funds to upgrade their infrastructure and import equipment.
- Adebayo noted that the appeals come as carriers struggle to expand their networks.
What You Need to Know
The GSMA, the global industry body for mobile operators, recently asked governments to allocate the 6GHz spectrum for mobile use. According to the organization, this band holds the key to unlocking a future of innovative connectivity and spurring economic growth worldwide.
- The 6 GHz band is expected to provide the capacity needed to support the speeds expected for 5G and future developments.
- Utilizing the 6 GHz band will allow mobile network operators to expand the capacity of their existing infrastructure, which means they can build networks more cost-effectively.
