Nigeria has kicked off the African Military Games in Abuja with impressive performances in handball. The men’s team won gold by defeating Ghana 31-23, while the women’s team secured gold with a 36-18 victory over the same opponent.
In his remarks after the games, coach Emeka Nnamani expressed his satisfaction with the teams’ adherence to game strategies. “I felt very happy and delighted to win. I planned with them very well, and they played exactly as I wanted to play,” he said.
In wrestling, Tochukwu Okeke won a silver medal in the men’s 87kg Greco-Roman event, beating Tunisia’s Sobri Mmosria in his third match.
However, Nigeria faced a setback in football, losing to Cameroon 1-0. The Cameroonians scored the decisive goal during added time.
The African Military Games gather military athletes from across Africa to compete in 19 sports, including basketball, tennis, and combat swimming. Only four countries—Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, and Equatorial Guinea—participate in the football event.
President Bola Tinubu officially opened the games, emphasizing the importance of unity among African nations to tackle shared security challenges. He highlighted that the Games serve as a reminder of collaboration among military institutions on the continent.
Today’s events include archery, basketball, boxing, football, squash, taekwondo, shooting, and wrestling.
