Irpin, Ukraine - At 5 a.m. on February 24, 2022, the peaceful quiet of Irpin, a suburb just outside Kyiv, was shattered by the deafening roar of explosions. sunday Adelaja,a 57-year-old Nigerian pastor,awoke too the terrifying reality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“It was like a nightmare,” Adelaja recalled. “We knew something was wrong, but we never imagined it would be this bad.”
Living near a military airport, Adelaja knew they had to act fast. He quickly gathered his wife,four students who were staying with them,and a backpack containing essential documents. They piled into their car and sped towards the Polish border, joining a desperate exodus of Ukrainians and foreigners fleeing the escalating conflict.
The journey was fraught with danger and uncertainty. Roads were clogged with traffic,and the constant threat of airstrikes loomed overhead. But Adelaja found solace in his faith and the unwavering support of his community.”We prayed constantly,” he said. “And the kindness of strangers along the way kept us going.”
After days of harrowing travel, Adelaja and his family finally reached the safety of Poland. They were welcomed with open arms by Polish citizens and aid organizations, who provided them with food, shelter, and medical care.
Despite the trauma of their escape, Adelaja remains determined to help others affected by the war. He is actively involved in providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees and advocating for peace.
“This experience has shown me the true meaning of resilience and the power of human compassion,” Adelaja said.”We may have lost our home, but we have not lost hope.”
