Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli concluded her tenure as NIH Director on Friday, reflecting on the agency’s vital role in science adn the lives of Americans. In her final message, she emphasized the importance of community engagement and ensuring equitable access to biomedical research.
Bertagnolli highlighted her visits to communities facing health challenges across the country, including West Virginia, Alabama, and several other states. These visits underscored the need to address financial, geographic, and cultural barriers that prevent people from receiving necessary care. She noted that sustained community engagement is crucial for improving health outcomes.
During her time as director, Bertagnolli initiated the Communities Advancing Research Equity for Health™ (CARE for Health™) pilot programme. this initiative connects primary care providers and their patients with research opportunities, aiming to make biomedical research more inclusive and accessible.
