HILLSBORO, Ore. — Nik Whitcomb, the producing artistic director for Bag&Baggage Productions, will conclude his tenure in june. Whitcomb is transitioning to pursue a graduate degree in urban planning and engage in community work with Brave Portland, the city’s public transit agency. This move reflects his dedication to public service.
Whitcomb, in his resignation letter, stated that leaving Bag&Baggage was a difficult but necessary decision for his personal and professional growth, and also the institution’s long-term health. He expressed gratitude for the company’s support and confidence in its future.
Bianca McCarthy, board president, thanked Whitcomb for his leadership, noting that he revitalized the company’s artistic spirit after the pandemic, championed daring repertory, and reconnected Hillsboro audiences with live performances.
During his two-and-a-half years as artistic director, Whitcomb’s role involved curating seasons that combined classic works with new perspectives. Notable productions included the regional premiere of Red Velvet, an outdoor performance of Tartuffe, and the launch of the Native Theater Project with Diné Nishłį (I am a Sacred Being). He also established the Hillsboro Youth Performance Ensemble,a program providing local teens with hands-on experience in theater production. These initiatives expanded the theater’s audience and strengthened ties with local schools and community groups, enhancing community engagement.
The board of directors is currently evaluating artistic leadership models and will announce future plans soon. Bag&Baggage, with an approximate budget of $708,000 as of 2024, has been a cornerstone of Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District for two decades, producing thought-provoking theater reflecting Washington County’s diversity.
