Nike has entered exclusive negotiations to become the official match ball supplier for UEFA’s men’s club competitions, a move that would end a 25-year partnership between Adidas and the Champions League.
The proposed agreement would see Nike provide the match balls for three major tournaments: the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Europa Conference League.
The proposed deal is a four-year contract set to begin in 2027 and run through 2031. Adidas, which has supplied the match ball for the Champions League since 2001, will continue its role until its current agreement expires at the end of the 2026/27 season.
Decathlon, the current supplier for the Europa League and the Europa Conference League, will also continue to provide match balls until its contract concludes after the 2026/27 campaign.
The Tender Process and Commercial Impact
The transition follows a competitive tender process launched in March 2026. The process was managed by UC3, a joint venture between UEFA and the European Club Association (also referred to as European Football Clubs), in coordination with the marketing agency Relevent Football Partners.
UEFA initiated the tender to maximize commercial revenue within the match ball sponsorship category. Following the bidding process, Nike emerged as the preferred candidate, leading to the current period of exclusive negotiations.
While the specific financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, the new deal is expected to represent a significant increase in value compared to the previous cycle.
As part of the next commercial cycle, Nike would join other major sponsors including PepsiCo and AB InBev.
Shifting Dynamics in the Match-Ball Market
The potential appointment represents a significant return for Nike to the elite European match-ball market. For over two decades, Adidas has dominated this sector, serving as the match ball supplier for the FIFA World Cup and the European Championship in addition to the Champions League.
However, the competitive landscape has shifted as other brands have expanded their presence. Puma has aggressively increased its footprint in football equipment sponsorships over recent years.
Puma’s expansion includes several high-profile acquisitions of match-ball rights previously held by Nike:
- Puma replaced Nike as the official ball supplier for the Premier League for the 2025-26 season.
- Puma became the official ball supplier for Serie A starting with the 2022-23 season.
- Puma has served as the official ball supplier for La Liga since the 2019-20 campaign.
- Puma took over the Copa America match ball from Nike in 2024.
The tender process for the UEFA competitions saw interest from both Nike and Puma, as Adidas also sought to retain its existing sponsorship.
Analysts suggest that while the deal will significantly boost Nike’s visibility across European club football, it is not expected to resolve the company’s broader challenges regarding sales or innovation.
