Nina Hughes, the former world champion in boxing, has announced her retirement. The 42-year-old bantamweight, from Billericay, Essex, said her passion for the sport waned during her recent victory over Nicholine Achieng.

Hughes, who claimed the world champion title in 2022 in only her fifth professional fight at age 40, reflected on her career. “I had a good career, it happened really quickly and I’ve enjoyed every part of it,” Hughes told BBC Essex.
Despite securing a win against Achieng, Hughes felt her performance indicated it was time to retire from professional boxing. She was knocked down in the final round but recovered to win on points. “Halfway through the fight the desire had gone,” she said.

Her boxing journey included a potential spot on team GB for the 2012 London Olympics, which she missed. After starting a family, she returned to the sport during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. Hughes’s career highlights include a meaningful upset victory over Jamie Mitchell in Dubai to win the world title. She later lost the WBA title to Cherneka Johnson.
The pro career was short, it was sweet, it was quick and it was good.
What’s next
Hughes said the decision to retire is supported by her coach, especially as securing fights became increasingly difficult. She emphasized that she is retiring on her own terms.
