Nintendo Fans Sample New Device Amid Tariff Concerns

TOKYO (AP) — Eager Nintendo enthusiasts got a sneak peek at the company’s latest gaming device Saturday, ahead of its official release. Though, potential tariffs loom, casting a shadow of concern over possible price increases.

Hidenori Tanaka,55,an employee at a real estate firm and participant in the preview event,expressed his worries. “Tariffs have increased since Mr. Trump’s presidency. I’m concerned that not only the console itself, but also its accessories, could become more expensive.”

Global Trade Tensions and Consumer Costs

Consumers worldwide may face higher prices‍ for electronics as tariffs imposed by the U.S. on trading partners,including China,elevate costs for companies operating with global supply chains. While some tariffs have been rolled back, the potential for a disruptive trade war remains a concern.

Gaming fans began gathering late saturday morning at the Makuhari Messe convention center⁤ near Tokyo. They were there to test ⁤upcoming titles⁣ such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza on the new console.

Strong Demand Despite Price Hike Fears

Despite the prospect of rising prices, early indicators suggest robust consumer demand for the successor to the original⁤ Switch.Since its launch in 2017,the Switch has sold over 150 million⁤ units,fundamentally transforming Nintendo’s business.

Nintendo, based in Kyoto, announced ‍Wednesday that it received 2.2⁣ million applications in Japan alone for a lottery to purchase the new console, far exceeding available‍ supply.

“To be honest, I ‍didn’t expect to win,” said Hyuma Hashiguchi,⁢ 28, one of the lucky early buyers. “Social media was full of people saying they ⁣lost, so I assumed I⁢ would too.”

Global Hands-On Events

Nintendo ⁢is hosting hands-on events around ⁢the globe, ‍including in New York, Berlin, and Hong Kong.

Pricing and Availability

The new console is currently selling in Japan for 49,980 yen (approximately $350 USD) in a Japanese-language-only version. In the United States, Nintendo initially paused pre-orders due to customs concerns but later confirmed the price would remain at $449.99.
