Nintendo is advising owners of it’s new Switch 2 console – and original switch users – to take precautions when gaming outdoors during the current heatwave. The warning stems from the consoles’ operating temperature limits and the potential for malfunctions in excessively hot environments.

Temperature Limits and Potential Issues

Nintendo has stated that both the Switch and Switch 2 are designed to function optimally within a temperature range of 5 to 35 degrees Celsius (41 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit). Recent temperatures in Japan, particularly in the Tokyo area, are exceeding this upper limit, with forecasts predicting 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) on August 5th.

When a Nintendo console is exposed to temperatures outside of this range,it can lead to overheating. This overheating can potentially cause malfunctions or,in severe cases, damage to the device. nintendo specifically highlights the importance of ensuring the console’s intake and exhaust ports are not blocked, as this exacerbates the issue. Blocked ports restrict airflow, causing heat to build up internally.

Nintendo’s Official Guidance

The warning was initially published on Nintendo’s japanese customer service social media account. “Recently, temperatures have been exceeding 35°C,” Nintendo wrote. “Please be cautious when using it outdoors.” This isn’t a new concern; Nintendo issued a similar warning for the original Switch in July 2022 during a previous heatwave.

The company’s advice remains consistent: avoid using the console in high-temperature environments. “When using a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 in a high-temperature environment, the device’s temperature may rise,” Nintendo explained. “This could potentially cause malfunctions, so please use it in a location between 5-35°C.”

Practical Tips for Summer Gaming

So, what can gamers do to protect their consoles and continue enjoying their favorite titles? Here are a few suggestions:

Play Indoors: The simplest solution is to game in a climate-controlled environment.
Seek Shade: If you must play outdoors, find a shaded area to minimize direct sunlight exposure.
Ensure Ventilation: Keep the console’s intake and exhaust ports clear of obstructions. Avoid placing the console on soft surfaces like blankets or pillows that can block airflow.
Take Breaks: Allow the console to cool down periodically, especially during extended gaming sessions. Monitor Temperature: While the Switch and Switch 2 don’t have built-in temperature displays, be mindful of how hot the console feels to the touch. If it becomes uncomfortably warm, power it off and let it cool down.

Ultimately, a little caution can go a long way in ensuring yoru Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 continues to provide hours of gaming enjoyment throughout the summer. Perhaps it’s a good excuse to stay indoors and dive into a new adventure – like Donkey Kong Bananza*!
