Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Slowdown: Economic Factors and Metroid Prime 4 Impact
Nintendo Switch 2 Holiday Sales Lag Behind Original
The Nintendo Switch 2 didn’t quite capture the same holiday magic as its predecessor, falling short of the original Switch’s sales numbers from 2017. A challenging economic climate and a lack of a major Western-developed game release are being cited as key factors.
According to analysis from The Game business, Switch 2 sales in the US and key European markets trailed the initial pace set by the switch in 2017. A senior Nintendo source, speaking anonymously, pointed to economic headwinds and the absence of a blockbuster Western title as contributing to the slower sales.
This assessment may surprise some, given the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond during the holiday season. Though, the game received a more subdued critical reception compared to earlier entries in the Metroid Prime series. Nintendo hasn’t yet released official sales figures for the title.
The numbers paint a clear picture: US Switch 2 sales were down approximately 35% compared to the original Switch’s 2017 performance. The UK saw a 16% decrease, and even in Japan, Switch 2 sales were 5.5% lower over the final nine weeks of the year.France experienced a drop of “over 30%.”
Despite these figures, the Switch 2 is still performing well overall.lifetime sales in Japan currently exceed those of the original Switch at the same point in its lifecycle.
