Kei Nishikori Returns to Japan Open Tennis Championships After 6 Years

Kei Nishikori, a former world No. 4, practiced at the Ariake Coliseum on September 23, 2024, ahead of the Japan Open Tennis Championships 2024. Before his practice, he expressed his excitement to the fans who had gathered at the venue, stating, “I want to have fun and show good play.”

Nishikori, 34, will be competing in the tournament for the first time in six years since 2018. He won the tournament in 2012 and 2014. In the first round, he will face Marin Cilic (Croatia), who is participating in the tournament as a protected ranking player. The winner of this match will face either third seed Casper Ruud (Norway) or world No. 29 Jordan Thompson (Australia) in the second round.

During his practice, Nishikori shared his thoughts on the upcoming tournament. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s been quite a while since I last played at Ariake in the Davis Cup, so there were many exciting moments. I was nervous, and I’m afraid of how nervous I’ll be this time, but I want to prepare thoroughly for the match.”

He also emphasized his desire to enjoy the tournament and perform well. “I want to play as many games as possible. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Japan, so I’m a bit nervous, but I want to enjoy myself and show my best performance. I’ve been playing well recently, so I’ll do my best to show everyone a good performance.”

The Japan Open Tennis Championships 2024 will take place from September 25 to October 1, 2024. Kei Nishikori’s match against Marin Cilic is highly anticipated, and fans are eagerly waiting to see him in action.
