Nishikori Set for Thrilling Opener: Japanese Star Faces Off Against Rising 19-Year-Old Sensation
Kei Nishikori to Face Shang Junchen in Chengdu Open First Round
Kei Nishikori, the 34-year-old Japanese tennis player, will face Shang Junchen, a 19-year-old Chinese player ranked 67th in the world, in the first round of the Chengdu Open men’s tennis tournament.
Nishikori, formerly ranked No. 4 in the world, has been competing in various tournaments, including the Italian Challenger tournaments, where he reached the quarterfinals in both events. He also participated in the Davis Cup World Group 1 match between Japan and Colombia, where he won the second singles match and contributed to Japan’s victory.
This will be the second time Nishikori has faced Shang Junchen, with their previous match taking place in the second round of the Atlanta Open last July, where Nishikori won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The winner of this match will face the winner of the match between eighth seed R. Safiullin and world No. 79 F. Fognini (Italy) in the second round. Taro Daniel, a Japanese player ranked 90th in the world, will also be competing in the main draw of this tournament, facing sixth seed Luis Sonego (Italy) in the first round.
Nishikori will participate in the Chengdu Open as a wild card, which begins on the 18th. This tournament will be an opportunity for him to showcase his skills and compete against top players in the world.
