Kei Nishikori Advances to Second Round at AON Open Challenger
Kei Nishikori, ranked 222nd in the world, has advanced to the second round of the AON Open Challenger in Italy. Nishikori defeated qualifying winner and world No. 386 M. Dellavedova (Australia) in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, in the first round held on the 3rd.
Nishikori’s opponent in the second round will be JP Vallijas, ranked 157th in the world, who defeated local Italian G. Cadenasso. This will be the first time the two have met. The winner of this match will face either third seed J. Munar of Spain or qualifier K. Feldbausch of Switzerland, ranked 445th in the world, in the quarterfinals.
Nishikori, 34, a former world No. 4, reached the quarterfinals at the Como Challenger last week but withdrew from the quarterfinals due to a shoulder injury. Although his participation was in doubt, Nishikori participated this week as well.
