Kei Nishikori to Face Preliminary Round Winner in HPP Open First Round
The HPP Open (Finland/Helsinki, indoor hard, ATP Challenger) men’s tennis tournament will begin on the 4th, and the singles pairings were announced on the 2nd. Ranked 140th in the world, Kei Nishikori will face the winner of the preliminary round in the first round.
Nishikori, 34 years old and former world No. 4, began competing in European indoor hard court tournaments last week at the Erste Bank Open (Vienna, Austria, indoor hard, ATP500). At the tournament, he lost in the first round, losing to John Draper (UK).
He won three matches at the current Slovakia Open 2024 (Slovakia/Bratislava, indoor hard, ATP Challenger), and won three matches since the Caribbean Open (Puerto Rico/Palmas del Mar, hard, ATP Challenger) in June last year. They advanced to the top four in an official tournament for the first time in about 1 year and 5 months.
In the semifinals held on the 2nd, he lost to No. 1 seed R. Safiulin in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6, and did not advance to the final.
Nishikori will also participate in the HPP Open, which starts next week, making him the third consecutive week in the tournament.
On the 2nd, the singles draw was announced, and it was decided that Nishikori would face the winner of the preliminary round in the first round. The opponent will be decided after the qualifying round, which will be held by the 4th.
If he wins the first round, he will face either No. 7 seed J. Kim (Switzerland) or the winner of the preliminary round in the second round.
