Pallekele, Sri Lanka – Pathum Nissanka’s magnificent century propelled Sri Lanka to a thrilling eight-wicket victory over Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on February 16, 2026, securing their place in the Super Eights. The win, achieved with two overs to spare, leaves Australia’s tournament hopes hanging by a thread.

Chasing a target of 182, Sri Lanka’s innings was anchored by Nissanka’s unbeaten 100 off 52 balls, a landmark achievement that marked only the second century by a Sri Lankan batter in T20 World Cup history, following Mahela Jayawardene’s feat. Kusal Mendis provided crucial support with a brisk 51 off 38 deliveries, the pair combining for a rapid 97-run partnership that laid the foundation for the successful chase.

The early stages of the chase saw a minor setback with the dismissal of Kusal Perera for just one run in the second over, claimed by Marcus Stoinis. However, Nissanka and Mendis quickly seized control, unsettling the Australian bowlers with their aggressive strokeplay. Their partnership not only stabilized the innings but also put Sri Lanka firmly in command.

Even after Mendis’s departure in the 13th over, Nissanka continued to accelerate, unleashing a powerful display of hitting. He smashed five fours and three sixes in the final 20 balls he faced, reaching his century off the fifth ball of the 18th over. Pavan Rathnayake then completed the job, hitting the winning run to seal Sri Lanka’s third consecutive win in the group stage.

“After we lost the first wicket, Kusal and I just planned to have a good powerplay,” Nissanka explained after the match. “He got a good start and that made things easier for me. We thought that there would be some dew, so the plan was to bat normally until that arrived. After 12 overs we were going to take stock and one of us would make a charge.”

Interestingly, the anticipated dew factor didn’t materialize as significantly as expected. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh noted that conditions “didn’t feel dewy” to him, despite Sri Lanka’s initial strategy being predicated on the pitch becoming easier to bat on later in the innings. Nevertheless, Nissanka’s explosive hitting proved decisive.

“I had a big target to hit a 100 in this World Cup, so I’m happy I was able to do that,” Nissanka added. “We had played a match on this wicket, and we knew it was good for batting. Because Kusal and I batted well also, Australia couldn’t bowl so well to us.”

Nissanka’s century wasn’t just about runs. it was also a testament to his athleticism and determination. Earlier in the match, he redeemed himself after dropping a catch off Glenn Maxwell, producing a spectacular leaping grab at backward point to dismiss the dangerous Australian batter.

“After the first catch went down, I was disappointed because I knew we had to get his wicket,” Nissanka said. “I made up my mind in that moment that I needed to do something special for the team. I thought he might play a reverse sweep in that moment and I was watching for it in the field. Fortunately I was able to complete the catch.”

Australia’s innings had earlier seen a solid start from Travis Head, who top-scored with 56 off 29 balls. However, the middle order faltered, and despite a late flourish, they were restricted to 181 all out. Wanindu Hemantha was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, claiming 3 wickets for 37 runs.

The defeat leaves Australia facing a near-impossible task to qualify for the Super Eights. They now rely on a complex series of results involving Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Oman, coupled with a significant improvement in their net run-rate. Their fate is no longer entirely in their own hands.

For Sri Lanka, the victory represents a significant step forward in the tournament. Having already secured their place in the Super Eights, they can now approach their remaining group match with less pressure, allowing them to further refine their game and prepare for the challenges ahead. Nissanka’s performance will undoubtedly be remembered as a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s campaign, a display of skill, determination, and clutch performance that has energized the team and delighted their fans.
