Douglas McCarthy, the vocalist and co-founder of the influential electronic body music (EBM) band Nitzer Ebb, has died. He was 58. His bandmates confirmed the news in a social media statement.
The proclamation stated that McCarthy died the morning of June 11, 2025. The band requested respect for McCarthy’s wife, family, and friends during this difficult time. Details regarding the cause of death were not instantly available.
Born in East London in 1966, McCarthy formed Nitzer Ebb in 1982 with Vaughan “Bon” Harris and David Gooday, whom he met while attending school in Essex. McCarthy told AnOther magazine in 2012 that the band quickly gained a following among punks after their first show at the Chelmsford YMCA. Inspired by Essex’s synth bands, they developed a synth-punk style that helped define electronic body music.
nitzer Ebb’s first single, “Isn’t It Funny How Your Body works,” came out in 1985. Their debut album, That Total Age, was released in 1987. The band promoted the album as an opener on Depeche Mode’s “Music for the Masses” tour in Europe. McCarthy became known for his intense performance style. A 1989 LA Times review noted his “athletic, pumped-up performing style and the punk-influenced fervor of his yowling.”
After Nitzer Ebb broke up following their 1995 album Big Hit, McCarthy collaborated with Terence Fixmer as Fixmer/McCarthy. He also released a solo album, Kill Your Friends, in 2013.The band later reformed in 2006.
McCarthy announced in 2024 that he would no longer tour with Nitzer Ebb due to cirrhosis. He said he was taking a break “for myself and the amazing people I have around me who continue to stand by my side in full support of getting me better.” He is survived by his wife and family.
