new⁣ Jersey Supreme Court Clears Way for Clergy Abuse Grand Jury

‌ Updated June 16,2025

the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled Monday that the state can proceed⁣ with ⁤a grand jury investigation into allegations of clergy‍ sexual abuse of children. The decision comes after⁣ the Catholic Diocese of Camden⁣ reversed its ‌long-standing opposition to such proceedings.

For years, the Camden diocese argued that a court rule prevented‍ the state attorney general from convening a grand jury to investigate ⁤decades of abuse‌ allegations against‍ church officials.⁢ Though, in early May,⁤ the diocese informed the court it would no longer ⁤block the inquiry.‍ Bishop Joseph Williams, who assumed‌ leadership of the diocese in March, said unanimous consent among⁤ stakeholders prompted the change.

The state’s high court, comprised of seven justices, unanimously concluded that a grand jury inquiry ⁢is permissible.”Courts cannot presume the outcome⁤ of an investigation in advance,”⁣ the‍ justices wrote. “We find that the state⁢ has the right to proceed with its investigation and present evidence before a special grand⁢ jury.”

The attorney general’s office welcomed the ⁢ruling. First Assistant Attorney General Lyndsay V. Ruotolo said the decision confirms the state’s right to pursue a‍ grand jury presentment on ‍statewide sexual‌ abuse by clergy. The office reiterated ‍its commitment to supporting survivors of sexual abuse.

The Camden diocese ⁤affirmed its commitment to cooperating ⁤with the investigation. “To the victims and all ⁢those impacted by abuse, we ⁤reaffirm our sorrow, our support, ⁣and our unwavering resolve to do what is right, now and always,” the diocese stated.

What’s⁢ next

The grand jury investigation will move forward, potentially uncovering further details regarding clergy abuse in New⁢ Jersey. The attorney general’s office is expected‌ to begin presenting evidence.
