⁢ ‍ ⁣

New Jersey voters will participate in the primary election on Tuesday, choosing candidates to succeed Gov.Phil ⁢Murphy. With the ⁣New Jersey governor’s race being one of only two such contests this year, it is viewed as an early indicator for national political trends.

Historically,‌ New Jersey’s gubernatorial elections ⁣often⁣ reflect national sentiment. The governor’s office has⁢ frequently shifted between ⁢parties. The last time one party held the governorship ‍for more ‌than ⁤two consecutive terms was in 1961.

Democratic⁤ Candidates ⁤for Governor

The Democratic field includes U.S.Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Mikie Sherrill,Jersey City Mayor Steven⁢ Fulop,Newark Mayor ras Baraka,New Jersey Education Association president Sean Spiller, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney. Gottheimer leads in fundraising, closely followed by Sherrill and Fulop.

Immigration ⁣has emerged as a key ⁢issue.‌ A trespassing⁢ case against⁣ Baraka,stemming‍ from a protest at a federal immigration detention centre,was dropped in ⁤May.

Republican Candidates for ‌Governor

On the Republican side, former state Assemblyman ⁣Jack Ciattarelli is making his third bid for governor. He narrowly lost to Murphy in 2021. State Sen.‍ Jon Bramnick, former Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario⁤ Kranjac, ‍talk radio host Bill⁣ Spadea, and general contractor Justin Barbera are also seeking the Republican nomination.

Ciattarelli received an endorsement from former President Donald⁢ Trump, who‍ campaigned for him in a virtual rally. Bramnick⁢ is the only Trump critic ⁢in the Republican ‍primary field.

Key counties such as Bergen, Middlesex, Essex, and Hudson often play ⁢a important⁤ role in Democratic primaries. In 2021, Ciattarelli won the Republican primary, securing the most⁣ votes in all 21 counties.
