New Jersey Teen Celebrates Five Years of Daily Surfing
For Carter Doorley, a 14-year-old New Jersey native, surfing isn’t just a hobby; it’s a way of life. He has dedicated the last five years to riding the waves every single day, without exception.
Doorley’s commitment began during the COVID-19 pandemic when other activities were shut down. What started as a way to pass the time quickly evolved into a daily ritual. He braved snow, a long walk to the beach, and less-than-ideal conditions to pursue his passion for surfing.
“It was definitely a journey,” doorley said, reflecting on the milestone. “It felt like just another day, but it was definitely engaging to know that I’ve come this far.”
One of the biggest challenges early on was the daily trek to the beach without a four-wheel-drive vehicle. “In the beginning, one of the toughest parts especially during the winter was walking down the beach every day… It’s a long walk,” Doorley explained. Despite the difficulties,he found beauty in the solitude and wildlife he encountered during those winter walks.
Inspired by surfers like Dale Webster, who famously surfed every day for 40 years, Doorley adopted a similar rule: catch at least three waves each day. He made exceptions only during extreme whether conditions.
Doorley has explored numerous surf spots along the East Coast, from Brigantine to Atlantic City. He says surfing every day has not only improved his skills but also shaped him as a person. “It’s taught me that good things come to those who wait,” he said. “It’s definitely made me a better person, it made me involved with my community, it made me nicer. It’s helped me all around.”

The New Jersey surfing community has rallied behind Doorley, with teachers and locals offering their support. He remains focused on the present, embracing whatever challenges come his way. “Whatever hits me, I hit back,” he said.

While Doorley isn’t sure if he’ll break Webster’s record, he plans to continue surfing every day until he has a compelling reason to stop. his dedication serves as an inspiration to surfers and anyone pursuing their passion.
