Hundreds of thousands of Americans still grapple with post-COVID symptoms, with 90,000 individuals experiencing severe complaints. A recent survey by a major news panel asked over 800 post-COVID patients about their outlook on the future. Nearly half of them see a bleak future, five years after the initial outbreak. “I struggle through,” one respondent shared.
Many individuals continue to face a significant reduction in energy levels, which severely limits their daily activities. One in twenty post-COVID patients in the study reported being unable to perform any tasks at all.
Oxygen
My brain has had a big blow: I still have cognitive problems and problems with fatigue every day,
wrote one panel member. My sense of smell and taste have never come back completely.
Another respondent noted, Although I was at the top fit, I got Corona. I was sick enough to have to bite for weeks. I have now had to give up sports and work because I have a lack of oxygen. The whole day it feels like I am dragging a 100 kilo backpack with me.
Among the panel members surveyed, 3 to 4 percent have post-COVID symptoms themselves. They often report having less energy (75 percent) and being less able to withstand crowds (60 percent). Consequently, they can do less or no longer exercise (42 percent) or household chores (38 percent). A quarter (27 percent) also indicated that their social contacts have been reduced due to their symptoms.
In addition to those directly affected by post-COVID, 5 percent of the panel members reported exacerbation of other health complaints and disorders due to COVID-19.
More than a third (37 percent) of the patients view the future optimistically. One respondent wrote, I am still recovering. It takes time, but with small steps I get a little further.
The establishment of post-COVID expertise centers has also fostered optimism. These clinics conduct research into treatment methods for a limited group of patients. I am on the waiting list to be treated and rather today than tomorrow. I can still only have a fraction of what I could and have been rejected for infection. But as long as there is a chance that I can still get improvement in my life, I want to tackle it with both hands,
said one hopeful patient.
Unfortunately, the largest group (48 percent) of patients view the future pessimistically. They look at the future with a sense of despair: The damage has already been done and I think this will no longer recover to the level of for Corona. You should think of everything you do whether or not you are going to do it. If you accidentally do too much, you will be bothered by it for three or four weeks.
Another respondent shared, There is no start of a solution worldwide. I try to stay positive, but that is not easy. I struggle through. Let me keep it up there.
Accountability
The investigation was conducted from February 21 to 24, 2025, among 20,500 members of a major news panel, including over 800 with post-COVID complaints. After weighting, the research is representative of five variables: age, gender, education, efficacy, and political preference. The panel has more than 52,000 members.

Recent Developments and Practical Applications
As the nation continues to grapple with the long-term effects of COVID-19, recent developments in treatment and support for post-COVID patients offer a glimmer of hope. The establishment of post-COVID expertise centers across the country is a significant step forward. These centers are dedicated to researching and developing treatment methods tailored to the unique needs of post-COVID patients.
For instance, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched several initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the long-term effects of COVID-19. The RECOVER (Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery) Initiative is a comprehensive study that aims to identify the underlying mechanisms of post-COVID conditions and develop effective treatments. This initiative is crucial in providing long-term solutions for the millions of Americans affected by post-COVID symptoms.
Practical applications of these findings are already being implemented in various healthcare settings. For example, some hospitals have started offering specialized post-COVID clinics where patients can receive personalized care and support. These clinics focus on a holistic approach, addressing both the physical and mental health aspects of post-COVID recovery.
Additionally, support groups and community organizations have emerged to provide emotional and practical support for post-COVID patients. These groups offer a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, seek advice, and find solace in knowing they are not alone in their struggles. The sense of community and shared experience can be incredibly empowering for those dealing with the long-term effects of COVID-19.
Despite these advancements, the road to recovery remains challenging. Many patients continue to face significant barriers, including limited access to specialized care, financial constraints, and the emotional toll of living with chronic symptoms. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach that includes increased funding for research, expanded access to healthcare services, and comprehensive support systems for patients and their families.
As we look to the future, it is essential to remain optimistic while acknowledging the realities faced by post-COVID patients. The establishment of post-COVID expertise centers and ongoing research initiatives offer hope for improved treatment methods and a better quality of life for those affected. By continuing to support and advocate for post-COVID patients, we can work towards a future where the long-term effects of COVID-19 are better understood and managed.
For those interested in learning more about post-COVID conditions and available resources, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides comprehensive information and support. The CDC’s website offers a wealth of resources, including guidelines for managing post-COVID symptoms, information on available treatment options, and links to support groups and community organizations.
In conclusion, while the journey to recovery for post-COVID patients is fraught with challenges, recent developments and practical applications offer hope for a brighter future. By continuing to support and advocate for those affected, we can work towards a world where the long-term effects of COVID-19 are better understood and managed, ultimately improving the quality of life for millions of Americans.
