Nobel Laureates Oppose Robert Kennedy Jr. as Health Secretary
Nobel Laureates Urge Senate to Reject Kennedy Jr. for Health Secretary
More than 75 Nobel prize winners have penned a letter to U.S. senators, urging them to vote against the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health. The laureates, including Drew Weissman, a 2023 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine for his work on mRNA vaccines, cite Kennedy Jr.’s “lack of experience” and his history of promoting anti-vaccine views as reasons for their opposition.
“Given his record, placing Mr. Kennedy at the helm of the Department of Health would pose a significant risk to public health,” the 77 Nobel laureates in Medicine, physics, Chemistry, and Economics wrote in their letter.
Kennedy Jr., nephew of assassinated President John F. Kennedy, initially ran for president before suspending his campaign and endorsing Donald Trump. Trump subsequently nominated him for the cabinet position, but the appointment requires Senate confirmation.
Kennedy Jr., a former environmental lawyer without a scientific background, has long promoted conspiracy theories about vaccines, including unfounded links between vaccination and autism. He has also advocated against water fluoridation, a public health measure widely recognized for its role in reducing tooth decay.
“Beyond his lack of qualifications or relevant experience in medicine, science, public health, or government, Kennedy has opposed numerous vaccines that have proven essential in protecting health and saving lives, such as those for measles and polio,” the Nobel laureates stated.
They concluded their letter with a direct plea: “We urge you to vote against the confirmation of his nomination as Secretary of Health.”
This is not the first time Trump’s cabinet picks have sparked controversy. Previous nominees, such as pete Hegseth for the Pentagon and Matt Gaetz for attorney General, faced significant backlash due to allegations of misconduct.
