Venezuelan Opposition Leader Corina Machado Gifts Nobel Peace Medal to Donald Trump
Venezuelan opposition leader Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Medal to Donald Trump on January 16, 2026, a gesture Trump called “wonderful.” The presentation has sparked debate regarding the ownership and ethical considerations surrounding the prestigious award.
Machado offered to share the prize with Trump, despite the Nobel Committee clarifying that the presentation does not transfer ownership of the award. The Nobel Committee reiterated this point.
This isn’t the first time a Nobel Peace Prize has been sold or gifted. In 2022, Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov auctioned his medal for $103.5 million to benefit refugee children from Ukraine. James Watson, who received the prize for co-discovering the structure of DNA, sold his medal in 2014 for more than $4 million (equivalent to approximately 21.5 million brazilian Reais as of January 17,2026).
