Antibiotics can leave lasting changes in the gut microbiome for up to eight years after a single course, according to a long-term study published in Nature Medicine.
Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden analyzed data from nearly 15,000 adults over an eight-year period, tracking antibiotic use and conducting stool sample analyses to assess gut bacterial composition. The study found that for six of eleven antibiotic classes examined, use within the year prior to sampling was associated with reduced microbial diversity in the gut.
The gut microbiome, consisting of trillions of microorganisms primarily bacteria, plays a critical role in digestion, metabolism, and immune function. Antibiotics, while targeting harmful bacteria, also affect beneficial microbes, leading to a temporary decline in bacterial diversity, and abundance.
