Christopher Nolan, the director behind hits like “Oppenheimer,” which grossed nearly $1 billion⁢ and won Best Picture at the Oscars, almost took a different path. Before his upcoming film, “The odyssey,” ‍Nolan⁤ considered directing “Troy.”

Writer David Goyer, speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, said Nolan was offered “Batman” as a consolation for not directing 2004’s “Troy.” goyer noted the irony, saying that Nolan was developing “Troy” before it shifted to Wolfgang Petersen.

Goyer explained that Petersen, who‍ had been developing “Batman vs. Superman,” effectively swapped projects with Nolan. The early 2000s ‍saw Petersen slated ⁣to direct a ⁢dark⁢ version of “Batman vs. Superman,” written by Andrew Kevin Walker.

Ultimately, Warner Bros. abandoned⁣ that version, and Petersen directed “Troy,” starring brad Pitt. Nolan, fresh off “memento”⁣ and “Insomnia,” then pitched his take on “Batman,” leading to 2005’s ⁣”Batman ‍Begins.”

A 2013 Deadline article indicated Nolan wasn’t⁤ feeling “Troy” and pursued “Batman” due to his long-standing interest in the character. “Batman Begins” reinvented the superhero genre, paving the way for “The Dark⁤ Knight” and “The Dark Knight⁣ Rises.”

While “Batman” wasn’t a consolation prize, directing “Troy” would have considerably altered Nolan’s career trajectory. Now, Nolan ⁣is filming “The Odyssey” for Worldwide Pictures, returning to Greek epics ⁤more than 20 ⁢years later. “The odyssey” is ⁤slated ‍for release on July 17,2026.
