Norfolk Police Shoot Man Dead in Thetford Crash

Police Shoot and Kill Man Believed‍ Armed After‍ Car Crash in Thetford

A man was fatally ⁤shot ⁣by police in Thetford, Norfolk, following a car crash on Sunday evening, according to Norfolk ‌Police.⁤ The incident occurred on London ⁣Road at approximately 8:35 PM GMT.

Police were ⁢initially called to the scene after the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the⁢ crash left the area holding what witnesses described as a handgun.Armed response officers arrived and ‍discharged their firearms at the ‌suspect from a​ short distance, ‌Norfolk Police stated.

Response and ​Fatality

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man was pronounced ⁣dead at the scene. The A11 road remained closed in both directions following the incident.

Investigation Underway

Norfolk Police have referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) ⁢as standard procedure.​ Assistant chief Constable David Buckley emphasized the seriousness of the event and the department’s commitment to transparency.

Buckley noted that while armed officers respond to numerous firearms-related calls annually,⁤ discharges of firearms are rare. He affirmed full cooperation with ⁣the IOPC investigation,including the provision of all body-worn footage and 999 ⁤call recordings.

Police ​have stated they are not seeking anyone else‌ in connection with the⁢ incident.
