McLaren team principal, Stella, emphasized the team’s strengthened unity following challenges at the Canadian Grand Prix. “So I’m very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact that we ended up more united and stronger,” Stella said.
Norris has gained ground, outscoring Piastri 86 to 85 in the last five races. Despite earlier errors, his performance indicates he remains a strong contender in the Formula 1 championship race.
During the race’s initial phase, piastri aggressively challenged Norris, maintaining close proximity until Norris’s first pit stop. Their wheel-to-wheel battle included a risky maneuver by Piastri at Turn 4, which he later admitted was “too marginal.”
Stella explained that Piastri acknowledged the risk, especially with aged front tires. “I think the fact that Oscar acknowledged it and said that he was sorry for that situation means that he knew that, especially at that phase of the stint when your front tires are quite aged, if you go for that gap you may not be entirely in control of the car, you may lock up,” Stella said.
The team principal added, “So I think the issue that I saw there is that the tires were locked, and with the lockup you lose control of the car, and we don’t want now the proximity of the two cars being determined by something that we are not fully in control of.”
Following the near miss, Norris pitted on Lap 20, while Piastri extended his stint by four laps, aiming for a tire advantage. Although Piastri emerged six seconds behind with fresher tires, he couldn’t close the gap, partly due to Norris’s pace.
Stella noted the strategic options, saying, “You have two options in that kind of situation. The first option is to pit right away, one lap after the car in the lead… The othre option is to delay the stop so that you build the so-called tire delta.”
he added, “I think today it wasn’t necessarily apparent because we cannot separate how the strategy worked for Oscar from how fast Lando actually was.”
The Austrian Grand Prix outcome, combined with Kimi Antonelli’s crash into Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, has significantly impacted Verstappen’s title aspirations. With a 61-point deficit to Piastri and concerns over the car’s consistency, Verstappen’s chances of retaining the title appear slim.
Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, acknowledged McLaren’s advantage. “I think this season, the buffer that [McLaren] have is significant,” Horner said. “It looks very much like a two-horse race.”
The evolving Formula 1 season promises a competitive battle. Stella emphasized the team’s focus: “I think with both drivers we need to look one race at a time… And then we will see in Abu Dhabi what the outcome is.”
What’s next
The Formula 1 season continues with anticipation as Norris and Piastri vie for the championship, promising intense competition in upcoming races.
