lando Norris has his sights set on reclaiming the Formula 1 lead from McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri at this weekend’s Spanish grand Prix. Though, the British driver insists the championship battle extends beyond their intra-team rivalry.
Just three points separate Norris and Piastri after eight races, with McLaren dominating the season with six wins. Piastri holds four victories to Norris’s two. norris briefly led after winning the Melbourne opener but ceded the lead to Piastri in Saudi Arabia. He narrowed the gap again with a win in Monaco.
Max Verstappen,the four-time world champion,sits third,25 points behind Piastri. Despite trailing, Norris believes Verstappen remains a notable threat.
“It’s a great feeling to be in the lead of the championship… but it’s not something that changes anything I do day to day,” Norris said Thursday. He added that his focus remains on winning each race, regardless of his position in the standings.
Piastri acknowledged Verstappen’s potential, highlighting Red Bull’s ongoing car development and performance gains. “The gap is not very large at the moment and they’ve genuinely been competitive,” Piastri stated.
Verstappen, however, downplayed his chances, stating, “For me it doesn’t really feel like a fight, to be honest. I just try to do my best, have a bit of fun out there.”
Formula 1 will also implement stricter front wing stiffness tests this weekend. While McLaren anticipates minimal impact, Ferrari suggests the changes could be a “game-changer.”
“There are tweaks here and there, but nothing that will change how we have to do it,” Norris said regarding the new regulations.
