North Gyeongsang Province is intensifying its focus on agricultural technology, with plans for a significant expansion of research and development initiatives in 2026. The province’s Agricultural Technology Institute unveiled its research agenda on February 17, 2026, prioritizing projects that leverage artificial intelligence and address the growing challenges posed by climate change.

The research priorities were determined following a rigorous review process, beginning with internal assessments and culminating in external evaluations conducted by a panel of experts including academics and industry representatives. Notably, farmers were included among the reviewers, ensuring that the proposed research aligns with practical needs and offers tangible benefits to the agricultural community.

Among the key projects slated for 2026 is the development and field testing of an AI-powered weeding system for plum orchards. Researchers will also focus on developing an AI-based management diagnostic model for farms. Further investment will be directed towards agricultural robotics, specifically the development of technology for managing cucumber crops in controlled environments. These initiatives reflect a broader trend in South Korea towards embracing advanced technologies to enhance agricultural productivity and efficiency.

Beyond automation, the province is also prioritizing research aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change on agriculture. Projects include the development of standardized cultivation techniques for leafy greens in vertical farms, research into reducing heat damage and increasing sugar content in mangoes and the development of mass propagation techniques for high-quality olive trees. These efforts are designed to bolster the resilience of North Gyeongsang’s agricultural sector in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns and environmental stresses.

The province is also strengthening its collaborative research efforts, actively seeking partnerships with local agricultural technology centers. This collaborative approach aims to bridge the gap between research findings and practical application, ensuring that innovations are rapidly deployed to address real-world challenges faced by farmers. These partnerships will focus on identifying and resolving specific local agricultural issues through joint research projects.

North Gyeongsang Province’s commitment to agricultural innovation extends beyond its own borders. South Korea as a whole is increasingly focused on food technology, as evidenced by a recent March 14, 2025 announcement of a $10 million investment in a cultivated meat research center in Uiseong County, also within the province. This center, slated to open in 2027, will support companies in developing and scaling up cultivated meat production, positioning South Korea as a leader in the emerging field of cellular agriculture. This investment underscores a national strategy to diversify food sources and enhance food security.

The province is also exploring the potential of local agricultural products for health and wellness applications. In September 2025, the ‘AI Reverse-Aging Research Institute’ was launched in Cheongsong County, dedicated to studying the potential anti-aging properties of locally grown produce, particularly apples. This initiative, part of the broader K-U City Project, aims to establish Cheongsong County as a hub for reverse-aging research and development, potentially creating new high-value products from local agricultural resources.

neighboring Yeongyang County is preparing to implement a smart agriculture development zone project, beginning in 2026, with a budget of 9.5 billion won ($6.6 million). This project will focus on data-driven farming techniques, including the use of autonomous tractors and drone sprayers, to improve productivity and stabilize farm management. The initiative reflects a wider trend across North Gyeongsang Province towards adopting data-driven solutions to address challenges related to climate change, labor shortages, and rising production costs.

“Through research and development that proactively responds to changes in the agricultural environment, we will enhance the competitiveness of North Gyeongsang agriculture and create results that can be felt in the field,” stated Jo Yeongsuk, Director of the North Gyeongsang Province Agricultural Technology Institute. The province’s multifaceted approach to agricultural innovation – encompassing AI, robotics, climate change adaptation, and value-added product development – signals a long-term commitment to securing the future of its agricultural sector and positioning itself as a leader in agricultural technology.
