North Hempstead Selects Brooke Holdings LLC to Operate Harbor Links Golf Course
The North Hempstead Town Board approved a new operator for Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington. Supervisor Jennifer DeSena will sign a 20-year agreement with Brooke Holdings LLC, replacing the longtime management by Century Golf Partners. This deal is expected to generate $18 million in rent and additional revenues.
Brooke Holdings is led by Kelley Brooke, a professional golfer and founder of the Bethpage Golf Group. Brooke expressed her excitement about investing in the course, aiming to enhance its offerings.
Century Golf Partners has managed the course since it opened in 1998. Their contract ends on December 31. Andy Gaudet, a vice president at Century Golf, expressed disappointment over the decision.
The past agreement with Century Golf paid them $250,000 annually and allowed a 10% share of excess course revenues. In contrast, Brooke will pay $350,000 in the first year, increasing to $1 million in the final five years, plus 15% of revenues above $7 million. Additionally, Brooke plans to invest $2.7 million in improvements in 2025.
In 2023, the course hosted 44,858 rounds on its 18-hole course, and 33,941 rounds on the nine-hole course, the highest usage in 10 years.
How does Kelley Brooke intend to balance private events and public access at Harbor Links Golf Course?
Interview with Kelley Brooke: New Operator of Harbor Links Golf Course
News Directory 3: Thank you for joining us, Kelley. The North Hempstead Town Board recently approved Brooke Holdings LLC as the new operator for Harbor Links Golf Course. Can you share your vision for the course moving forward?
Kelley Brooke: Thank you for having me! My vision for Harbor Links is to enhance the golfing experience for both our regulars and newcomers. We aim to invest in the course to improve its facilities, introduce new programs that engage the community, and create a welcoming atmosphere. Our focus will be on sustainability and providing exceptional service to all our guests.
News Directory 3: You mentioned investment. Could you elaborate on the $2.7 million you plan to put into improvements in 2025?
Kelley Brooke: Absolutely. Our plan includes renovating the clubhouse, upgrading the course conditions, and modernizing the practice facilities. We also want to invest in technology to improve the overall golfing experience. This enhancement will not only attract more players but also encourage them to return. Our goal is to make Harbor Links a premier golfing destination.
News Directory 3: The agreement with Century Golf Partners has been a long-standing one since the course opened in 1998. What do you believe distinguishes your approach from theirs?
Kelley Brooke: While Century Golf has done commendable work, our approach is different in that we’re committed to reinvesting in the course significantly right from the start. Our experience in the industry allows us to implement innovative practices that will enhance both course management and player engagement. We are also keen on creating more public access and driving community involvement.
News Directory 3: There has been some criticism regarding the number of private events impacting public tee times. How do you plan to address these concerns?
Kelley Brooke: We have heard the residents’ concerns loud and clear. Our intention is to balance private events with public access. We’ll be imposing limits on private outings to ensure that our community has ample opportunity to enjoy the course without restrictions. Moreover, we’re looking at how we can host more public events, such as tournaments or charity events, which will bring the community together.
News Directory 3: The recent vote on your agreement was quite close, with a 4-3 outcome. How do you feel about the board’s decision and the support from the Republican members?
Kelley Brooke: I appreciate the support from the board members who voted in favor. Their willingness to embrace new opportunities is encouraging. I understand that some members had reservations, and I respect their right to seek thorough reviews before voting. I’m hopeful that over time, everyone will see the positive impact our management will bring to Harbor Links.
News Directory 3: Looking ahead, what should the community be most excited about with your leadership at Harbor Links?
Kelley Brooke: I believe the community will be excited about the revitalization of the course, the new programs we’ll implement, and the enhanced facilities. Our commitment to creating an inclusive environment means that there will be something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting. Expect to see more events, better amenities, and, a transformed Harbor Links that the community can truly call their own.
News Directory 3: Thank you for your time, Kelley. We look forward to seeing the improvements at Harbor Links!
Kelley Brooke: Thank you! I’m looking forward to making Harbor Links a place everyone can enjoy and appreciate.
The board voted 4-3 in favor of the new agreement. Republican members supported it while Democratic members opposed it, citing insufficient time for review and concerns about voting on an unfinished contract. DeSena stated that board members are not authorized to negotiate details.
The Town of Hempstead operates both its golf courses. The Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is managed by Lessing’s under a separate long-term contract.
Residents have previously raised concerns about the number of private events at Harbor Links limiting public tee times. The town is working to address these issues by imposing limits on private outings.
