Bogotá Suffers Major Disruptions as Usaquén Residents Protest for Basic Services
Bogotá DC – Commuters in Bogotá faced significant disruptions this Sunday as residents of the eastern hills in Usaquén took to the streets to protest what they call the neglect of their communities by the administration of Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán.
The exhibition, wich began at 165th Street with Seventh Avenue and continued to 170th Street before reaching the North Highway, has brought traffic to a standstill. Both mixed and trunk lanes of the North Highway are completely blocked, causing a monumental traffic jam.
The impact extends to public transportation, with Transmilenio stations Terminal, Calle 187, Toberín, Calle 161, Mazurén, calle 142, and Portal Norte temporarily suspending operations.
Decades of Neglect
The heart of the matter lies in the residents’ demands for the legalization of their homes and neighborhoods, a request they say has been outstanding for over 30 years. Beyond legalization, they are also calling for guaranteed access to essential infrastructure, including reliable aqueduct and sewerage services.
“The State Council ordered crucial works throughout the adaptation strip of the city, and they have not wanted to do them,” explained Luís Jerez, a resident of Usaquén.”Neither this administration nor the past administrations. Even in this administration, in the formation of the Development Plan, we participated and proposed solutions, and the District Administration did not host them.”
A Plea ignored
According to the protesters,a detailed list of specifications was submitted to the Mayor’s Office, only to be met with silence.Frustration over this perceived disregard has driven residents to take their grievances to the streets, demanding the presence of district secretaries to address their concerns.
The situation remains fluid, and commuters are advised to seek option routes and expect delays. We will continue to update this story as it develops.
