About 250 meters of personnel and vehicle alignments lined the runway at Pyongyang’s Mirim Airfield on October 7, captured by U.S. commercial satellite imagery as North Korea approached a political milestone.

North Korea Celebrates Workers Party Founding Anniversary

The country marked the 81st founding anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10, centering celebrations on domestic achievements, internal unity, and expressions of loyalty to Kim Jong Un. State media outlets reported that the country used the anniversary to praise its economic and military milestones.

The ruling party’s newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published a front-page editorial on October 10 under the headline Great Mother Workers’ Party of Korea. The editorial cited the post-war Chollima movement and the rapid industrialization achieved within 14 years as decisive historical victories, asserting that the country’s dignity and might have reached their highest level.

State reporting also highlighted recent construction projects in the Hwasong district of Pyongyang and the commissioning of a new 5,000-ton destroyer named Kang Gun Ho last month. The editorial framed these developments as proof that the future of a socialist power is grounded in science rather than hypothesis. A companion article by the Korean Central News Agency emphasized that the party serves the people by realizing their dreams under the guidance of the general secretary.

Party Officials Pay Respects to Former Leaders

Ahead of the anniversary, senior party officials paid respects at the Kumsusan Palace of Sun, where the bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are enshrined. Members of the Political Bureau of the Workers’ Party of Korea Central Committee and other top leadership figures participated in the visits. Floral baskets bearing the names of the Party Central Committee, the State Affairs Commission, the Supreme People’s Assembly Standing Committee, and the Cabinet were delivered to statues of the former leaders.

International messages of congratulation arrived from foreign leaders and political organizations. Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith sent a congratulatory message to Kim Jong Un, who subsequently replied with expressions of gratitude.

Scaled-Back Military Preparations at Mirim Airfield

While state media focused on political loyalty and cultural festivities—such as youth evening gatherings and fireworks at Kim Il Sung Square and a women’s ice hockey match between Taesongsan and the Pyongyang Railway Bureau—external observations revealed scaled-back military preparations. U.S. commercial satellite imagery captured on October 7 showed troop and vehicle activity across three areas at the Mirim Airfield in Pyongyang.

The imagery displayed about 250 meters of personnel or vehicle alignments along the runway, along with a U-shaped formation. However, analyst Jacob Vogel told Radio Free Asia that the scale and activity range were markedly reduced compared to previous military parades, suggesting that preparations started later or that authorities intentionally limited the event to avoid international monitoring.

Seoul Evaluates Tactical Deployments

South Korean government officials stated that they were closely monitoring the minor deployment of personnel and equipment while continuing to evaluate whether a formal parade would take place.

A government official noted that they are closely monitoring trends such as small-scale personnel and equipment, adding that it is necessary to see whether a military parade will be held.

Unlike the 80th anniversary in 2025, which featured a large-scale night parade, the 81st anniversary proceeded with more constrained public military displays.
