North Korean leader Kim Jong Un employs extreme security protocols, including specialized toilets and rigorous cleaning, to prevent foreign intelligence agencies from collecting his biological data.
The ‘Special Toilet’ and Waste Disposal
Kim Jong Un’s security detail goes to extreme lengths to safeguard his health data. According to Harry Kazianis, senior director of North Korea studies at the Stimson Center, a key component of this security is a specialized toilet.
“The special toilet and the requisite garbage bags of detritus, waste and cigarette butts are so that a foreign intelligence agency, even a friendly one, does not acquire a sample and test it,” Kazianis told NBC News. This is to prevent analysis of his bodily waste, which could reveal information about his health.
The concern isn’t limited to urine or feces. Hair and skin cells, even cigarette butts, can provide valuable biological data.”It would provide insight into any medical conditions affecting Kim jong Un. this can include hair and skin tags,” Kazianis explained.
Obsessive Cleaning protocols
The use of a specialized toilet is just one aspect of a broader pattern of meticulous cleaning. Reports indicate Kim’s team consistently sanitizes and inspects environments before his arrival.
In 2019, following a summit with U.S.President Donald Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam, North Korean guards spent hours blocking access to Kim’s hotel room, removing items including a bed mattress. This suggests a thorough search for potential surveillance devices or opportunities for sample collection.
Similar behavior was observed during his 2018 meeting with then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in. North Korean security personnel sprayed a chair and desk with sanitizer and meticulously wiped them down before Kim used them.
More recently, at a 2023 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kim’s security team again wiped down his chair with disinfectant. Video footage shows a guard using a metal detector to scan the seat, ensuring it was free from any hidden devices.See video footage here.
Why the Concern? The Value of Biological Intelligence
The lengths to which Kim Jong un goes to protect his biological data underscore the value of such intelligence. Analyzing biological samples can reveal:
- Existing medical conditions: Diabetes, heart disease,
