A powerful nor’easter is bringing blizzard conditions to the Northeastern United States, disrupting travel, knocking out power, and prompting states of emergency across the region. Millions of residents from Maryland to Maine are under blizzard warnings as the storm intensifies, with some areas already reporting over two feet of snowfall as of Monday, February 23, 2026.

Travel Grounded, Infrastructure Strained

The storm has caused widespread travel chaos. More than 5,500 flights have been canceled Monday, according to FlightAware, with the New York area airports – JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark – experiencing the most significant disruptions. Authorities are urging travelers not to go to airports unless their flights are confirmed as operating, and to check directly with airlines for updates. New York City imposed a travel ban Sunday evening, and it remains in effect until noon Monday.

Road travel is also severely impacted. Street closures are widespread due to accumulating snow and whiteout conditions, which the National Weather Service describes as “potentially life-threatening.” Several states, including New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, have declared states of emergency, implementing commercial vehicle bans and travel restrictions. School districts in New York City and Boston have announced closures for Monday.

Power Outages Affect Hundreds of Thousands

Over half a million homes and businesses across the Eastern Seaboard are without power, according to poweroutage.us. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds – gusting up to 70 mph in some areas – is contributing to downed power lines and widespread outages. Restoration efforts are expected to be hampered by the ongoing blizzard conditions.

Snowfall Totals and Intensity

The National Weather Service reports that the storm is dumping 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour in some locations. By 10:00 a.m. ET, parts of New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts had already reported more than 2 feet of snow. Central Park in New York City has received over 15 inches of snowfall. Officials are warning that the storm could rank among the 10 worst in New York City’s history, spanning 150 years.

Impact on Residents

The storm is not only disrupting daily life but also posing physical challenges for residents. In New York City, Jose Lopez, a 55-year-old resident, spent five hours shoveling snow in Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood, noting the snow’s softness made it easier to move, but emphasizing the physical exertion required and the dangers of overexertion, which can lead to heart attacks. He also cautioned about the risk of becoming too cold while shoveling, making it difficult to resume work. “The secret is it’s all mental,” he added.

Regional Breakdown

The impacts are being felt across a wide geographical area. While the heaviest snowfall is concentrated in the Northeast, the storm’s effects extend as far south as Delaware. Boston is experiencing fierce wind gusts, reaching 55 mph. Washington, D.C., and the Mid-Atlantic region began to feel the storm’s initial impacts Sunday evening.

Coastal Concerns

In addition to heavy snow and strong winds, coastal flooding and erosion are potential concerns as the storm pushes water onto the coasts. The combination of high winds and heavy precipitation is creating hazardous conditions along the shoreline.

Ongoing Monitoring and Updates

Authorities are continuing to monitor the storm’s progress and provide updates to the public. Residents are urged to heed travel warnings, conserve energy, and take precautions to stay safe during the blizzard conditions. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported over 2,500 flight cancellations in the New York area as of 8:00 a.m. ET.

The storm is expected to continue through Monday night, with conditions gradually improving thereafter. However, the full extent of the damage and disruption will not be known until the storm has passed and recovery efforts can begin.
