Ballymena Reels After Racially Motivated Violence
Updated June 11, 2025
Ballymena, Northern Ireland, experienced a second night of unrest Tuesday, with police reporting racially motivated attacks following a protest over an alleged sexual assault. Hundreds of protesters, many masked, filled the streets, throwing petrol bombs, bottles, and masonry. Police responded with water cannon and plastic baton rounds.
The violence initially broke out Monday night after a vigil in the neighborhood where the alleged sexual assault occurred Saturday. The racial tension in the town, which has a significant migrant population, remained high throughout Tuesday. Residents described the scenes as “terrifying,” saying the rioters targeted “foreigners.”
assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson condemned the violence. “This violence was clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police,” Henderson said Tuesday. “It was racist thuggery, pure and simple.” He added that authorities are working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
According to police, the masked individuals broke away from the vigil, built barricades, stockpiled missiles, and attacked properties. Security forces endured a “sustained attack” with petrol bombs, fireworks, and bricks, resulting in injuries to 15 officers, some requiring hospital treatment. Four houses sustained fire damage, and windows and doors of homes and businesses were smashed.
The Ballymena riots follow similar incidents in August, when racism-fueled disorder erupted in Northern Ireland after riots in English towns and cities triggered by the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport, northwest England.
