Residents across the United Kingdom witnessed the Aurora Borealis illuminate the night sky on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and Oct. 10, 2026, with visibility stretching as far south as Devon, Hampshire, and Kent. The Met Office stated that powerful solar eruptions known as coronal mass ejections unleashed streams of charged particles that interacted with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.

Solar Eruptions Drive Rare Southern Visibility

When charged particles from coronal mass ejections collide with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, they emit photons of colored light to create the aurora. While activity levels reaching 200 nanoteslas typically restrict the phenomenon to the north of the UK, Saturday’s surge to 600 nanoteslas allowed the lights to appear across the entire country. bcc.com reported that experts have identified 2026 as a peak year for aurora-spotting due to the Sun’s heightened state of activity during its 11-year natural cycle.

Geomagnetic Storm Watches Extend Across the Atlantic

Similar solar activity prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a moderate G2 geomagnetic storm watch for North America. Space reported that an eruption on Oct. 6 launched a coronal mass ejection toward Earth, leading forecasters to track its speed and trajectory. Additionally, usa.today reported that two separate coronal mass ejections leaving the Sun on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8 were expected to merge, pushing potential aurora visibility across northern and upper Midwest states from New York west to Idaho.

Forecast Conditions and Viewing Guidance

The Met Office indicated that clear skies could allow sightings to continue in Scotland and similar geomagnetic longitudes through Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026. Viewers are advised to look northward away from bright streetlights. Experts recommend using a mobile phone camera to capture the colors because human eyes rely on rod cells in low-light conditions at night, which perceive only black and white, whereas digital cameras do not have this limitation.
