HANOI (AP) — Northern and north-central regions of Vietnam are preparing for a meaningful drop in temperatures and heavy rainfall, according to the national hydrometeorological forecasting center.
Cold Weather Expected
The most intense cold is anticipated during the nights of April 13-14. The northern region can expect temperatures to plummet to between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius (61-66 Fahrenheit),with mountainous areas perhaps experiencing lows below 13 degrees Celsius (55 Fahrenheit). The north-central region is forecast to see temperatures ranging from 17 to 20 degrees celsius (63-68 Fahrenheit).
Hanoi, the capital city, will experience the onset of colder weather starting the night of April 12. The nights of April 13-14 are predicted to be particularly cold, with temperatures fluctuating between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius (63-66 Fahrenheit).
Heavy rainfall and Thunderstorms
The approaching cold air mass is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains to the northwest region and the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh throughout the day and night of April 12. Accumulated rainfall is projected to range from 30 to 60 mm (1.2 to 2.4 inches), with some areas potentially exceeding 90 mm (3.5 inches). Showers and scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the area from quang Tri to quang Ngai in the evening and at night, with localized rainfall of 15 to 30 mm (0.6 to 1.2 inches) and isolated areas exceeding 60 mm (2.4 inches).
Potential for Extreme Weather
The forecasting center warns of the possibility of extreme weather events associated with thunderstorms, including tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds. the combination of intense rainfall over short periods (exceeding 80 mm/3.1 inches in 6 hours) raises the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides in steep mountain regions.
Marine Conditions
At sea, the influence of the cold air, coupled with the northeast monsoon, is expected to generate strong northeast winds of level 6-7, gusting to level 8-9, in the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern part of the east Sea. Wave heights are predicted to reach 2-3 meters (6.5-10 feet), creating rough sea conditions. The Quang Tri to Quang Ngai zone will experience northeast winds of level 5, occasionally reaching level 6, with gusts to level 7-8 and wave heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5-8 feet).
While sea winds are expected to gradually decrease from April 13, the national hydrometeorological forecasting center has assessed the risk of natural disasters due to violent winds, large waves, and sea tornadoes at level 2 on April 12, indicating a perilous level for ships and maritime activities.
