Northwestern Football to Split 2026 Home Games Between Two Venues
Northwestern University’s football team will play its 2026 home games across two locations: Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium and the new Ryan Field. The Wildcats will open the season with their first two home contests at Martin Stadium before transitioning to the newly constructed Ryan Field for the remainder of their home schedule.
The season begins with a game against South Dakota State on , followed by a matchup against Colorado on , both to be played at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, the lakefront facility that has served as a temporary home for the program in recent years.
The highly anticipated debut of the new Ryan Field is slated for , when Northwestern hosts Penn State in a Friday night Big Ten Conference opener. This game, presented by FOX Sports, will mark the first official event held at the $862 million stadium built on the site of the previous Ryan Field.
Following the Penn State game, Northwestern will play its remaining five home games at Ryan Field. The timeline for the stadium’s completion has shifted slightly from initial plans, with construction now expected to be finished by mid-.
According to Pat Ryan Jr., CEO of Ryan Sports Development, the decision to begin the season at Martin Stadium was a practical one. “The only way we would have been able to support those games is if we finished early, and just with the weather alone, there’s no way we were going to get this thing done then,” Ryan Jr. Said. “So we’ve had tough headwinds, but we’ve had some good tailwinds because of great people. And the stadium, despite all of this, is going to end up being delivered in mid-September, on time.”
The opening of Ryan Field is considered a significant milestone for Northwestern Football, reflecting the university’s investment in its athletic program. Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Mark Jackson stated, “The opening of the new Ryan Field marks a defining moment for Northwestern Football and reflects our continued investment in excellence across every aspect of the program.” He added that the stadium will “elevate the student-athlete experience and bring us together in powerful and memorable ways.”
The date also holds historical significance, marking exactly 100 years since the opening of Northwestern’s original Ryan Field in 1926.
Head coach David Braun and the Wildcats will face a personal connection in their September 12 game against South Dakota State, as Braun previously served as the defensive coordinator at North Dakota State, South Dakota State’s primary rival. Wide receiver Griffin Wilde will also be facing his former team, having transferred to Northwestern from South Dakota State.
