Norway Expresses Disbelief Over Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize Transfer to Trump
Norway reacted with surprise to the news that Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado presented her medal to United States President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed a desire to receive the award.
“This is completely unprecedented,” saeid janne Haaland Matlary, a professor at the university of Oslo adn former politician, on public broadcaster NRK. She described the act as “a total lack of respect for the award” and labeled it “senseless” and “pathetic.”
Trump, who has stated he deserves the peace prize for resolving conflicts during his second term, received the medal from the Venezuelan opposition leader at a meeting at the White House on Thursday, January 15, 2026. He had previously voiced his dissatisfaction with the norwegian Nobel Committee’s decisions.
The Nobel Committee stated last week that the prize cannot be shared or transferred. The committee did not respond to requests for comment on Friday, January 16, 2026.
