Norway’s Oldest Bar: Reindeer Dogs in a Tiny Kiosk

Norway’s Oldest Bar: Reindeer Dogs in a Tiny Kiosk

January 13, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

High above the Arctic Circle, in the epicenter of northern tourism, a tiny‍ kiosk‍ appears that stands out among the snow for two reasons: ‍its striking yellow color and the lines that form daily to try what is sold inside. This has been happening since 1911 in the city⁣ of tromsø,more specifically in‍ its main street,Storgata, where ‌for 115 years this place has become a quasi-global icon for⁤ its famous reindeer dogs.

Raketten,⁤ that’s what this kiosk is called and which‌ translates into Spanish as El Cohete, “was born as a classic street stall⁢ where newspapers, bags of snacks, some drinks,⁣ ice cream -in the⁢ summer season- and, above⁤ all, sweets and chocolate, since at that time there were two ‌chocolate ⁢factories in the city”says ⁤Victoria Siri, the‍ current manager of the establishment. ‍”At that time,as the older people say, there were three kiosks, but Raketten has ‍always remained in the same place,” she explains.

Its story is also the ‌story of Tromsø: it has survived two ‍world wars, a ⁤devastating‍ fire and the‌ fierce passage of Arctic weather. Its founder, Margit Løkke, opened it in 1911 and turned it into ⁤an vital meeting point in ⁢the city, becoming one⁢ of the few entrepreneurial women ⁣of the time.⁤ One‌ of its great milestones, for which the country’s Cultural Heritage Department decided to protect it as a living piece of⁢ Norwegian history, occurred‌ in 1969, when a large fire devastated the center of Tromsø, reducing 28 wooden houses in its historic ‍center to ashes.“`html
