Norway’s Shocking Price Surge: How a Bitcoin Mining Facility Closure Sent Electricity Costs Soaring
Norway’s Bitcoin Mining Facility Closure Sparks Electricity Price Hike
Residents of the Norwegian municipality of Hassell have successfully pushed for the closure of a local Bitcoin mining facility, resulting in a significant increase in electricity bills for the community.
Climate tech venture capitalist Daniel Batten expressed his concerns about the situation, stating, “When politicians mislead Bitcoin, people suffer.” He emphasized the importance of understanding the impact of Bitcoin mining on local communities.
The Bitcoin mining center in Hassell was shut down in the week of September 9th, following years of complaints from residents about the noise disruption. Mayor Kjell Borge Freiberg acknowledged the concerns, stating that the noise from the facility was a significant worry for many residents.
However, the closure of the mining facility has resulted in a 20% reduction in revenue for the local electricity supplier, Noranet. This decrease in revenue is expected to lead to a sharp rise in electricity prices for the community. Robin Jacobsen, network manager at Noranet, explained, “When a big customer like this goes out overnight, it’s going to have an impact.”
Daniel Batten argued that this situation highlights the potential benefits of Bitcoin mining in keeping electricity prices low for everyday people. He emphasized that the closure of the facility would ultimately lead to higher electricity costs for the community.
The data center used approximately 80 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity each year, equivalent to the annual use of around 3,200 homes. Mayor Freiberg has announced plans to explore new projects to offset the reduction in energy consumption following the mining center’s closure.
The Impact of Bitcoin Mining on Local Communities
Noise complaints about Bitcoin mining facilities have been reported in other Norwegian municipalities, including Soltland. In September 2022, residents of Soltland complained about the noise disruption caused by a local Bitcoin mining facility.
Kjetil Hove Pettersen, CEO of local mining company CryptoVault, argued that these complaints are often exaggerated and do not reflect the opinions of all local residents. He emphasized the importance of considering the benefits of Bitcoin mining for local communities.
In the US state of Arkansas, a bill is being introduced to impose noise restrictions on virtual currency mining facilities. The bill is awaiting signature from Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
