Norwegian Royal Family Faces Scrutiny Amid Epstein Files Revelations

The release of millions of documents detailing the associations of Jeffrey Epstein has triggered a political storm in Norway, drawing scrutiny to members of the royal family, particularly Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The documents reveal a more extensive connection between the Crown Princess and Epstein than previously acknowledged, prompting public questions and a formal apology.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit admitted in 2019 to having contact with Epstein, but recent disclosures suggest the relationship was more significant. According to reports, she even conducted online searches about him. The unfolding situation has placed the Norwegian monarchy under considerable pressure, with questions raised about the extent of knowledge within the royal household.

When questioned by the press last week about the impact of the recent developments on the royal family, King Harald remained silent. Two days later, the Royal House issued a statement, and Crown Prince Haakon addressed the media.

“She would like to tell her side, but she is not able to do so right now,” Crown Prince Haakon said, according to reports. The statement from the Royal House conveyed Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s desire to offer a “deep apology” for her friendship with Epstein.

“It is important for me to apologize to all of you whom I have disappointed. Some of the content in the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I want to be,” the Crown Princess stated.

The situation has garnered significant attention both in Norway and internationally. Paul Ronge, a Swedish PR consultant and crisis manager, believes the Royal House has handled the matter appropriately thus far. However, he suggests there may be further solutions for Crown Princess Mette-Marit in the wake of the Epstein revelations.

Ronge contends that the Crown Princess’s conduct during the years she was in contact with Epstein was inappropriate, given her position and the potential damage to the trust placed in the monarchy. He described the Crown Princess’s earlier admission of “poor judgment” as an understatement.

A recent survey conducted by Verian on behalf of TV 2 revealed that nearly 47.6 percent of respondents believe Crown Princess Mette-Marit should not become Norway’s next queen.

Ronge believes the Royal House must consider the potential consequences if King Harald were unable to continue his reign and Crown Prince Haakon were to ascend to the throne. He suggests removing the possibility of Mette-Marit becoming queen, potentially through a separation while remaining together, as one possible solution.

He emphasized that a simple apology is insufficient, stating, “It’s like trying to wash the Västerbro bridge in Stockholm with a toothbrush – it just won’t work.”

Ole-Jørgen Schuldsrud-Hansen, a royal expert for TV 2, also believes the public deserves answers from Crown Princess Mette-Marit, suggesting a press conference similar to one she held in 2001, where she openly discussed her past.

Schuldsrud-Hansen noted that Mette-Marit ended her correspondence with Epstein in 2014 after the royal household became aware that he was exploiting her position. He believes her judgment ultimately improved, but the path to that point was more complex than initially understood.

The Crown Princess has already postponed a planned overseas trip, a move Ronge suggests could be part of a strategy to manage the fallout from the Epstein files. He believes the situation is deeply damaging to her reputation.

“That’s what everyone is saying. It’s not an original viewpoint. She has really messed things up for herself,” Ronge told TV 2, adding, “The worst part is that she lied.”

TV 2 has sought comment from the Royal House regarding Ronge’s criticism, but they have declined to respond.

Ronge also believes Crown Prince Haakon is receiving considerable sympathy, with many questioning how Mette-Marit could have maintained such extensive contact with Epstein.

“He bears no blame for this,” Ronge stated.

Schuldsrud-Hansen reminded the public that Mette-Marit ended her communication with Epstein in 2014, and the royal household stated it was due to concerns that Epstein was misusing her role as Crown Princess. He believes that good judgment eventually prevailed, but acknowledges that it took time and is deserving of criticism. He also noted that rebuilding trust is a “laborious process.”
