Notre Dame Cathedral Reveals Stunning Restoration Ahead of December Reopening
Notre Dame Cathedral Reopens After Five-Year Restoration
After five years of intense restoration work, Notre Dame Cathedral revealed its stunning interior on November 29, 2024. The rebuilt ceilings and fresh stonework erase the memories of the devastating fire that occurred in April 2019.
Recent images from a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron show the cathedral’s bright and open spaces. The famous stained glass windows shine under the winter sun, resembling how worshippers might have experienced the cathedral in medieval times.
While the exterior still shows signs of construction, the renovated interior was showcased for the first time. The public will have access starting December 8, 2024.
Key Restoration Highlights
-
Repaired Ceilings: The restoration eliminated the large openings in the vaulted ceilings caused by the fire. New stonework has replaced the charred debris and now features delicate golden angels.
-
Brightened Interior: The cathedral’s limestone walls, once dull and grimy, now gleam with freshly cleaned surfaces.
-
Advanced Cleaning Techniques: Workers used powerful vacuum cleaners to remove toxic dust and applied layers of latex to extract dirt from the stonework. They cleaned about 42,000 square meters, an area roughly equivalent to six soccer fields.
- Handcrafted Reconstruction: Carpenters rebuilt the roof using traditional methods, hewing oak beams by hand. Approximately 2,000 oak trees were used in this process.
Celebrating the Restoration
Macron entered through the intricately carved doors and admired the impressive ceilings. He was accompanied by his wife, Brigitte, and the Archbishop of Paris.
In his speech to the workers, Macron highlighted the significance of their efforts, referring to the project as the “building site of the century.” He expressed hope that the reopening would restore hope and healing to the nation.
Macron will return on December 7, 2024, to give another address and attend a Mass for the consecration of the new altar.
This restoration marks a new chapter for Notre Dame Cathedral, aiming to welcome visitors and worshippers back to this iconic site.
