Novak Djokovic has been eliminated from the 2026 French Open following a five-set defeat to 19-year-old Joao Fonseca. The result leaves the men’s singles draw without any remaining Grand Slam champions as of the end of the tournament’s sixth day.
The match lasted four hours and 53 minutes, ending in a 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 victory for Fonseca. Djokovic, 39, initially held a commanding position in the contest, establishing a 5-1 lead in the first set within the first half hour of play.
Despite winning the first two sets, the Serbian player suffered a collapse that allowed Fonseca to secure three consecutive sets. This marks only the second time in Djokovic’s career that he has lost a Grand Slam match after winning the first two sets, bringing his career record in such scenarios to 279-2. The only other instance of such a loss occurred at the French Open in 2010 against Jurgen Melzer.

Fonseca, aged 19 and nine months at the time of the match, becomes the first teenager to ever defeat Djokovic at a Grand Slam tournament.
The defeat removes the last Major winner from the competition. The draw has seen a series of unexpected exits, including the second-round departure of the No. 1 seed, Jannik Sinner. Daniil Medvedev, Stan Wawrinka, and Marin Cilic were all eliminated in the first round.
With no former champions remaining, the tournament is set to crown a new champion. The only remaining players in the draw who have previously reached a Major final are Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Matteo Berrettini.
Djokovic entered the tournament as the world No. 4, a ranking recorded as of March 30, 2026. A three-time former champion at Roland Garros with titles in 2016, 2021, and 2023, Djokovic had been pursuing a historic 25th Grand Slam title.
The loss is a significant statistical anomaly for the Serbian player, who has historically dominated the early stages of five-set matches in Major tournaments. His inability to close out the match after a two-set lead highlights a rare vulnerability in a career defined by consistency in Grand Slam play.
The victory for Fonseca represents a breakthrough for the teenage player, who overcame an early deficit and the pressure of facing one of the most successful players in tennis history to advance in the draw.
