NPP Withdraws Support from BJP Government in Manipur Amid Crisis
Seven MLAs from the National People’s Party (NPP) have withdrawn their support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Manipur. They cited a worsening situation in the state and the government’s inability to manage the crisis as reasons for their departure.
Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and NPP national president, informed BJP president J.P. Nadda about this decision in a letter. He expressed deep concern for the law and order situation in Manipur, noting the recent increase in violence and suffering among the people.
Sangma criticized the state government, stating that it has failed to restore normalcy. As a result, the NPP has decided to end its support for the government immediately.
Despite the departure of the NPP, the BJP still holds a strong majority, with 37 MLAs in the 60-member assembly. The BJP maintains support from other regional parties and independent members.
The MLAs who withdrew support include Sheikh Noorul Hassan, Khuraijam Loken Singh, Irengbam Nalini Devi, Thongam Shanti Singh, Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, N. Kayisii, and Janghemlung Panmei.
How might the ongoing unrest in Manipur affect voter sentiments in the upcoming elections?
Exclusive Interview with Political Analyst Lila Bahadur on NPP’s Withdrawal of Support from BJP in Manipur
NewsDirectory3.com: Thank you for joining us today, Lila. The political landscape in Manipur is shifting following the National People’s Party’s decision to withdraw support from the BJP government. What do you make of this development?
Lila Bahadur: Thank you for having me. The withdrawal of support by seven MLAs from the NPP is indeed significant. It reflects growing discontent with the current government’s handling of the crisis in Manipur. This rift suggests that the party no longer sees an alliance with the BJP as tenable, especially given the worsening law and order situation.
NewsDirectory3.com: Conrad Sangma has expressed deep concerns about the violence and instability in Manipur. How do you interpret his remarks, and what impact do they have on the BJP’s position?
Lila Bahadur: Sangma’s decision to communicate directly with BJP president J.P. Nadda indicates a serious breakdown in trust. By openly criticizing the government’s inability to restore normalcy, he not only signals his dissatisfaction but also encourages public discourse on the BJP’s governance. While the BJP maintains a strong majority with 37 MLAs, this withdrawal could embolden other parties or independent members to reassess their alliances.
NewsDirectory3.com: The NPP has called for support from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Do you think their concerns will lead to any effective action from the central government?
Lila Bahadur: The involvement of the Ministry of Home Affairs is a positive sign, especially with the arrival of CRPF DG Anish Dayal Singh. His assessment and discussions with state officials could pave the way for more robust interventions. However, whether this translates into meaningful action will depend on the government’s willingness to address the root causes of the unrest and not just the symptoms.
NewsDirectory3.com: Following the NPP’s press conference, they emphasized the suffering of the people in Manipur. What implications does this have for future elections?
Lila Bahadur: The NPP’s focus on the plight of Manipur’s residents could significantly influence public sentiment moving forward. If the situation does not improve, many voters may seek alternatives to the BJP in upcoming elections. This could reshape the political alliances in the state, as parties that advocate for effective governance and stability could gain traction.
NewsDirectory3.com: Lastly, what should we keep an eye on as this situation unfolds?
Lila Bahadur: Monitoring the responses from the central government and the state’s capacity to manage the ongoing crisis will be crucial. Additionally, watching how the BJP manages its coalition dynamics will be important. The coming weeks will give us a clearer picture of whether this withdrawal leads to further fragmentation within the ruling coalition or if the BJP can stabilize the situation with its remaining support.
NewsDirectory3.com: Thank you, Lila, for your insights on this critical issue.
Lila Bahadur: Thank you for having me; it’s been a pleasure discussing this.
Following the announcement, the NPP held a press conference in Imphal to discuss the deteriorating situation. Y. Joykumar, the party’s national vice president, emphasized that the people of Manipur cannot endure the current suffering any longer. He praised the Ministry of Home Affairs for its efforts, including sending CRPF DG Anish Dayal Singh to Manipur.
Anish Dayal Singh arrived in Imphal to assess the situation after protests and violence escalated, particularly in the valley districts. There have been reports of bodies being recovered near Jiribam, raising fears about the safety of residents.
The CRPF DG met with state government officials and security forces to discuss measures to improve security and ease tensions in the region.
