NREL Transportation Researchers Awarded for Innovation & Collaboration

July 30, 2025 Victoria Sterling -Business Editor Business

# NREL transportation Researchers Honored for Pioneering Work in Vehicle Technologies

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) has recognized several National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers for their exceptional contributions to advancing vehicle technologies. The awards celebrate leadership, innovation, and collaboration in developing tools and strategies that are shaping the future of transportation.

## NREL Teams Recognized for Groundbreaking Modeling Tools

Two NREL teams were lauded by VTO for their progress of sophisticated modeling tools: the Route Energy Prediction (RouteE) modeling tool and the Future Automotive Systems Technology Simulator (FASTSim). These tools are instrumental in minimizing energy consumption, simulating complex powertrains, and accurately estimating the impact of technological advancements on light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles.

The recognition highlights the teams’ remarkable ingenuity, collaborative spirit, impactful contributions, and outstanding technical expertise. this year’s award specifically acknowledged the integration of novel research approaches and the continuation of vital collaborations with external partners, most notably Google Maps. The work of these NREL teams was pivotal in enabling Google Maps’ widely used eco-routing feature, which guides drivers toward more fuel-efficient routes.

the researchers honored for their work on routee and FASTSim include Chad baker, Robin Steuteville, Nick Reinicke, Jeff Gonder, Shashi Peddireddy, Balashanmuga Priyan Rajamohan, Ananta Shrestha, kyle Carow, Jake Holden, Rob Fitzgerald, Josh Hoshiko, and former NREL intern Natalie Schultz. their dedication to developing these powerful simulation and prediction tools underscores NREL’s commitment to driving sustainable transportation solutions.## VTO Team Award for Cooperative Driving Automation

In addition to the modeling tool awards, two significant multi-lab Cooperative Driving automation (CDA) projects received VTO Team Awards. One of these projects involved a collaborative effort between NREL, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory. these CDA projects were specifically recognized for their outstanding inter-laboratory collaboration and their success in advancing the understanding and implementation of Cooperative Driving Automation.

The researchers involved in these CDA projects developed cutting-edge software, algorithms, and hardware. These innovations are crucial for quantifying the energy impacts of CDA systems and understanding their sensitivity across various dialog frameworks. The work also supports specific CDA and active traffic management (ATM) applications, paving the way for more efficient and safer road networks.

Cooperative Driving Automation refers to a system where multiple vehicles and road users can communicate with each other and coordinate their actions. This communication aims to enhance travel safety and improve traffic flow. The CDA project teams were particularly commended for their ongoing efforts on a shared scenario designed to demonstrate specific CDA controls, showcasing the practical request of their research.

NREL researchers Nick Reinicke, a transportation energy transition analysis researcher, and Qichao Wang, a computational science researcher, were recognized as key contributors to these impactful CDA projects. Their expertise in computational modeling and energy analysis was vital to the success of these collaborative initiatives.

NREL continues to be at the forefront of transportation and mobility research, driving innovation that supports a cleaner, more efficient, and safer transportation future.
