NSW Gamblers Lose $1 Million Hourly on Pokies
Pokies Drain $1 Million From NSW Gamblers Every hour, Sparking Calls for Urgent Reform
Sydney, Australia – A new report from the New South Wales Department of Liquor and Gaming has revealed a staggering statistic: gamblers in the state are losing a million dollars every hour to poker machines. Between July and September alone, a staggering $2.25 billion was lost to pokies, fueling calls for immediate action on the recommendations of a recent gaming reform report.
“These figures are deeply concerning,” said Sally Gainsbury, Director of the Gambling Treatment and Research Center at Sydney University’s Brain and Mind Centre and a member of the NSW Panel on Gambling Reform. “The sheer scale of these losses highlights the urgent need for thorough reform to protect vulnerable individuals and communities.”
The report, released earlier this year, outlined a series of recommendations aimed at curbing problem gambling, including reduced operating hours for poker machine venues, mandatory pre-commitment schemes, and stricter advertising regulations.
Gainsbury emphasized the importance of swift government action.”Every hour that passes without meaningful reform, another million dollars is drained from our communities,” she said. “We urge the NSW Government to prioritize the implementation of these recommendations to mitigate the devastating impact of problem gambling.”
