Concerns are growing regarding the potential health impacts of living near nuclear power plants, with recent research adding to a body of evidence suggesting an increased risk of cancer. While nuclear energy is increasingly discussed as a potential solution to climate change, experts emphasize the need for a more thorough understanding of its potential health consequences, particularly for those residing in close proximity to these facilities.

Increased Cancer Risk Linked to Proximity

A study published on December 18, 2025, by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, found a significant association between residential proximity to nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Massachusetts and increased cancer incidence. The study, appearing in Environmental Health, analyzed cancer data from 2000 to 2018, controlling for factors like air pollution and socioeconomic status. Researchers estimated that approximately 20,600 cancer cases – roughly 3.3% of all cases studied – could be attributed to living near an NPP, with the risk decreasing substantially beyond a distance of roughly 30 kilometers.

The risk of developing cancer attributable to proximity to a nuclear power plant generally increased with age, according to the study. This finding underscores the potential vulnerability of older adults to the health effects associated with environmental exposures.

Expanding Evidence Base

This Massachusetts-based research builds upon a growing body of epidemiological studies investigating the health impacts of NPPs. Researchers note that studies conducted internationally have yielded varying results, highlighting the need for more comprehensive and geographically diverse research. The Harvard study aimed to contribute to this evidence base by focusing on a specific region and rigorously controlling for potential confounding factors.

A meta-analysis and meta-regression review published in June 2024 in Current Environmental Health Reports further supports these concerns. This review, analyzing data from 47 studies encompassing over 480,000 workers and 7.5 million residents near 175 nuclear power plants across 17 countries, found significantly increased risks for all-cancer, thyroid cancer and leukemia among residents. Workers at these plants showed a significantly lower risk for all-cancer but a significantly higher risk for mesothelioma.

Vulnerable Populations

The meta-analysis identified children under five years old as particularly vulnerable, exhibiting the highest risk for all-cancer. This finding raises specific concerns about the potential impact of environmental exposures on early childhood development and long-term health outcomes.

Regulatory Standards and Ongoing Debate

The findings from these studies are particularly relevant in light of ongoing discussions about expanding nuclear power as a means of addressing climate change. The meta-analysis specifically noted that increased health risks were observed even among populations exposed to radiation levels that meet current regulatory dose limits. This suggests that existing standards may not be fully protective of public health.

Concerns about the loosening of radiation exposure standards were previously raised in 2019, with scientists decrying a push by the Trump administration to boost nuclear power. These concerns centered on the potential for increased cancer cases resulting from less stringent regulations.

Need for National Study

Experts are calling for a national cancer study near US reactors before any further expansion of nuclear power. This call for more research emphasizes the importance of proactively assessing and mitigating potential health risks associated with nuclear energy, particularly as its role in the energy landscape evolves.

While the studies demonstrate an association between proximity to nuclear power plants and increased cancer risk, it’s important to understand that correlation does not equal causation. Researchers acknowledge the complexity of disentangling the effects of radiation exposure from other environmental and lifestyle factors that can contribute to cancer development. The mechanisms by which proximity to nuclear power plants might increase cancer risk are not fully understood. Potential pathways include exposure to low levels of radiation, as well as other environmental factors associated with plant operations. Further research is needed to elucidate these mechanisms and develop more effective strategies for protecting public health.

The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring of cancer incidence rates near nuclear power plants and the need for transparent communication of potential risks to affected communities.
