Premier League Players Face Uncertain Future Amid Transfer Window
Updated June 27, 2025
As the summer transfer window progresses, several high-profile Premier League players find themselves in uncertain situations. With clubs across Europe’s major leagues actively seeking to strengthen their squads, some players risk becoming “untransferables” due to high wages, performance issues, or a combination of both. The transfer window opened June 16 and closes Sept. 1.
Among those facing an anxious summer are Marcus Rashford of Manchester United and Darwin Núñez of Liverpool. These players, along with others like Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish, are seeking new opportunities after falling out of favor with their current clubs. A key issue for these Premier League players is that only a limited number of clubs outside the league can afford their wages and transfer fees.
Manchester United faces a notable challenge in finding a club willing to take Rashford and his £325,000-a-week salary. After struggling to meet the demands of coach Ruben Amorim, the 27-year-old forward has been sidelined since December. A loan spell with Aston Villa yielded only four goals in 17 appearances. While Rashford is reportedly interested in a move to barcelona, the Spanish club’s pursuit of Nico Williams has reduced the likelihood of that transfer.
With three years remaining on Rashford’s contract, Manchester united would need a transfer fee of at least £45 million to avoid an accounting loss, a critical factor in complying with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).Another loan move appears to be the most realistic option, even though the possibility of rashford returning to training next month remains a concern for Amorim.
Darwin Núñez is also available for transfer this summer after spending much of last season as a fringe player for Liverpool. Despite a €75 million transfer from Benfica in 2022, Núñez has scored just 40 goals in 143 appearances. Liverpool values the Uruguay international at €50 million, a price that has deterred potential buyers. Napoli has expressed interest in the 26-year-old, but the Serie A champions must first resolve the future of Victor Osimhen before pursuing Núñez.
What’s next
As the transfer window continues, the futures of Rashford and Núñez remain uncertain. Clubs will need to balance their financial constraints with the desire to strengthen their squads, potentially leading to creative solutions such as loan deals or renegotiated transfer fees.
