Medical Students Cite Dialogue Gaps, Overwhelming Pressure in clinical Training
Medical students frequently experiance feelings of being overwhelmed and overloaded, a phenomenon not unique to Spain but observed internationally. A recent study in Iran highlights a critical need for improved communication between students and their tutors and instructors, whom they view as essential figures in their learning process. The study also emphasizes the importance of increased involvement in clinical practise.
Future doctors report that they learn from every interaction with professionals, including doctors and nurses. One participant in the study published in BMC Medical Education noted the importance of connecting with supportive individuals in the high-pressure clinical environment.”Everyone is under pressure and the workload is high in the clinical environment,so I try to find people who are fine and connect with it,” the student said. The student also described seeking out a nurse to learn how to administer angiocatheters and suture wounds.
The studyS authors emphasize that communication and interaction between professionals and students reinforce learning. These lessons extend beyond scientific and technical knowledge to include improved social skills and patient care. As one young dentist stated, learning how to properly position suction in a patient’s mouth to minimize discomfort was invaluable. A nursing student added that listening to patients’ relatives often provides valuable details about their illnesses.
Key Deficiencies in Medical Education
The report identifies four major shortcomings in medical education:
- Feelings of loneliness and pressure
- Critical observation by instructors
- Deficiencies in the clinical environment
- Lack of communication as a learning tool
Researchers stated that the study’s findings offer significant insights into medical students’ experiences in clinical settings. They underscore the necessity of transforming educational policies and practices to foster autonomy and active learning. This includes addressing challenges such as inadequate resources, high stress levels, and unequal learning opportunities.
To enhance the educational experience, the study recommends that clinical education policies prioritize equitable access to learning resources and promote a culture of respect and collaboration among all health professionals.
The study also suggests that addressing these deficiencies requires strong and continuous cooperation between faculties and educational centers. Political leaders in medical education should promote measures such as continuous professional advancement for clinical instructors, periodic feedback systems to gather student experiences and suggestions, and the allocation of sufficient resources to improve educational and assistance facilities in clinical environments.
