Union Highlights Concerns as Contract Deadline Approaches

The Sharp Professional Nurses Network, an affiliate of United Nurses Associations ⁤of California/Union of Health Care Professionals⁣ (UNAC/UHCP), ⁢delivered a‍ petition to Sharp HealthCare leaders on September 17, 2024, outlining nurses’ concerns ⁣during ongoing contract negotiations. The current labor agreement is set to expire on September 30, 2024.

The union represents more than 5,700⁣ nurses across the Sharp HealthCare system. Negotiations for a new contract began in ⁣July 2024.

Petition Details Nurse Concerns

The petition, signed by approximately 3,000 nurses, calls for improvements in several key areas, including pay, sick leave policies, and working conditions. According to a news release from UNAC/UHCP,⁤ the petition states, “registered nurses are the heart ⁢of the Sharp Experience. Patients come⁣ here⁤ for us. We demand that Sharp put patient care first by investing in its nurses through fair pay,‍ fair treatment, and a fair contract.”

Sharp HealthCare Responds to Union Demands

Sharp HealthCare acknowledged receiving the petition, stating that it was received “in the⁤ same mutually respectful manner ⁢as the parties’ negotiations have been conducted,” according to a spokesperson. The health ⁣system emphasized its “long ⁤and‍ positive relationship” ⁤with its nurses and their union.

However, sharp HealthCare indicated that the union’s economic proposal, presented on⁢ August 29,⁤ 2024, is ⁣financially unsustainable. The proposal would reportedly add more than $800 ⁢million in costs over three years. sharp maintains that its current nurse wages are at or above market rates, but the union’s demands are not ⁣feasible given the ‍financial challenges facing nonprofit healthcare providers like ⁤Sharp.
